What Our Guests Say
"Location is beautiful. It is tucked away in a working farm, and there is no site of it until the bus gets to a certain point. It's amazing the detail that has been done. Impressive collaboration between Peter Jackson and landowner, Russell Anderson, to recreate and preserve this location to share with fans. The setting as a whole was the most impressive. They also created two hobbit holes, so tourists can go in. Neat detail. Guide provided additional tidbits that further enhance the experience."
"Our tour guide, Paul, was great. He was both informative and entertaining at the same time. We learnt lots of interesting facts about the filming and how parts of the set were built."
"We thoroughly enjoyed going into one of the Hobbit Holes, that was so great! And, the scenery was literally magnificent… everywhere we looked was so, so beautiful. And, the Green Dragon Inn was an awesome way to end our day! Thank you for this wonderful experience. I can’t stop talking about it, seriously!"
"The guide was very good. I was a little disappointed at the end. 2 years ago when we went we were given and a mug as a souvenir but this time round we weren’t."

Hobbiton & Lord of the Rings Tour New Zealand — FAQ
Everything you need to know before booking your Middle-earth experience
Absolutely — 8,591 guests have rated the official Hobbiton Movie Set tour 4.9/5. The 12-acre working farm set has been meticulously maintained since filming wrapped, and the guided experience includes the Green Dragon Inn and behind-the-scenes stories no self-drive visit can replicate. If you're even a casual LOTR fan, it's a bucket-list experience.
No. The Hobbiton Movie Set is on a private working farm and is only accessible via an official guided tour. There is no self-drive or walk-in option. Tours depart from the Shire's Rest Cafe on Buckland Road, where a bus shuttles guests to the set (no private cars allowed on the property). Our Hobbiton tour vs self-drive comparison explains the three real ways to plan your visit and which suits your trip.
The official Hobbiton Movie Set Guided Tour starts from $76 per person and includes the full guided walk plus a complimentary beverage at the Green Dragon Inn. Multi-day packages from Auckland combining Hobbiton with Waitomo Caves start from $178–$255 per person. Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before your tour.
The standard guided tour takes approximately 2.5 hours. This includes the bus transfer from the Shire's Rest car park to the attraction (~5–10 minutes each way), the guided walk through the 12-acre set, and time in the Green Dragon Inn. Day trips from Auckland that combine Hobbiton with other attractions run 8–11 hours total.
Hobbiton is located on the Alexander Farm near Matamata, in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. It's approximately 2 hours south of Auckland, 45 minutes from Hamilton, and 45 minutes from Rotorua. The meeting point is the Shire's Rest Cafe at 501 Buckland Road, Matamata. Free parking is available on site.
You can drive to the Shire's Rest Cafe car park, but no private vehicles are allowed beyond that point. A dedicated bus (included in all tour tickets) transports guests from the car park to the movie set. There is no self-guided option — a guide must accompany all visitors to the 12-acre property. See our guide to what to expect on the Hobbiton tour for a step-by-step walkthrough of arrival, the bus transfer, and the set itself.
The South Island contains some of LOTR's most dramatic landscapes: Glenorchy and Paradise (Isengard, Lothlórien), Edoras plateau near Mt Sunday in Canterbury (Rohan), and Queenstown's Remarkables skyline (background for several battle sequences). Dedicated 4WD and guided tours depart daily from Queenstown and Christchurch to reach these locations. Our Lord of the Rings filming locations guide maps every key site across both the North and South Islands.
The top-rated option is the Lord of the Rings Tour to Glenorchy — a 4.5-hour scenic journey from Queenstown to Paradise and Glenorchy, visiting filming locations used for Isengard and the Fellowship's arrival in Lothlórien. A 4WD half-day tour covering more rugged terrain is also popular. Both depart daily from central Queenstown.
Yes — Wellington has two great LOTR experiences. The Wētā Workshop Guided Tour (from $32) takes you behind the scenes of the world-famous special effects studio that created the props, armour, and weapons for the trilogy. The Original LOTR Full-Day Tour with Weta & Lunch (from $190) combines filming location scouts with an exclusive workshop visit and a themed lunch.
Every official Hobbiton Movie Set guided tour includes: a guided walk of the entire 12-acre set with an expert guide; access to all 44 Hobbit Holes; a complimentary specially brewed beverage at the Green Dragon Inn; and the bus transfer from the Shire's Rest car park. Transfers from Auckland or Rotorua are available as add-ons via multi-day packages. Read our what to expect on the Hobbiton Movie Set tour guide for a full walkthrough of the experience.
Hobbiton is open year-round and runs tours in all weather conditions (umbrellas provided). For the most cinematic green scenery — the rolling hills that made the Shire iconic — visit in spring (September–November) or early summer (December). Autumn brings warm golden tones. Summer (January–February) is peak season; book tickets weeks in advance. Our best time for a Lord of the Rings tour guide breaks the year down month by month.
Yes — the most popular day trip from Auckland is to Hobbiton Movie Set (2 hours south), with options that include a festive Hobbiton lunch, a full day combining Hobbiton and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves (11 hours total from $218 per person), and small-group tours for a more personalised experience. Book in advance as Auckland-departure spots sell out quickly.
